Activity Overview

The Advanced Rheumatology Course is a comprehensive 19 module educational series, relevant to advanced practice providers and other professionals who need a deeper dive into rheumatology, with a strong focus on advanced information that will 1) help experienced practice providers function well in rheumatology and 2) foster inter-professional collaboration.  This online course is designed to provide advanced comprehensive education to help learners assess and manage patients with rheumatic disease, develop strategies to integrate NP/PAs into rheumatology practice and improve access to care for patients.

*A passing score of 70% or greater on the post-test is required to be eligible to claim CME credits. You can compare your post-test responses to evaluate increased knowledge.

Target Audience

The course was created for nurse practitioners and physician assistants; however, rheumatology fellows-in training, internal medicine residents, medical students, primary care providers and other providers new to rheumatology may also benefit.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following: 

  1. Differentiate the three basic causes of joint pain, characterizing joint presentations and developing a limited differential diagnosis of joint pain.
  2. State the epidemiology, risk factors, and genetics associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  3. Chart the progressive nature of the disease process, including the basic immunology of RA and the rationale for early aggressive therapy in RA.
  4. Categorize the distribution of joint involvement and extra-articular manifestations for early, advancing, and end-stage RA disease.
  5. Summarize laboratory abnormalities and the utility of rheumatoid factor, and cyclic citrullinated antibodies, and radiologic changes in RA.
  6. Discuss specific language of clinical trials, the utility of outcome measures, and the Disease Activity Score for RA.
  7. Integrate the historical and current context of treating RA, including the side effects of medications and the schedule for monitoring for adverse events, when caring for persons with RA.
