Activity Information

The ARP NP/PA Onboarding Toolkit is a resource for medical offices on the role of NP/PA staff. The topics include reasons to hire an NP/PA, mentoring an NP/PA, and NP/PA evaluation and feedback. Each recorded webinar is 30-60 minutes.

  • Webinar 1 : Why Hire an NP/PA?: Learn the roles of Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician Assistant (PA), address the increasing need for these additional advanced practice providers, and hear helpful information practices that are considering hiring a qualified NP/PA.  In this 30-minute interview style webinar, Daphne Scaramangas-Plumley, MD, and Bryant Uy, PA-C, discuss these topics from their rheumatology medical practice.  
  • Webinar 2: Mentoring an NP/PA: Learn different styles of mentoring and how to tailor them to individual offices, as well as how to avoid any potential pitfalls that come with mentorship. In this 60-minute webinar, Donald E. Thomas, Jr., MD, FACP, FACR, and Chikako Riester, CRNP, from Arthritis and Pain Associates of PG County discuss these topics and more.
  • Webinar 3: NP/PA Evaluation and Feedback: Hear methods of evaluation and assessment in PA and NP performance in rheumatology in this 30-minute webinar with Robert Ettlinger, MD, and Neil Moody, PA-C.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this series, participants should be able to:

Webinar 1: Why Hire an NP/PA?

  • Highlight the role(s) of an NP/PA in rheumatology practice
  • Demonstrate how the utilization of NP/PAs in rheumatology can help address workforce challenges
  • Inform practices on issues to consider when adding an NP/PA


Webinar 2: Mentoring an NP/PA

  • Describe how rheumatologists should set up the on-boarding of an APC into their practice
  • Recognize the importance of having the APC shadow the rheumatologist as part of the on-boarding and mentoring process
  • Outline the transition of APC from new hire to independent rheumatology provider
  • Understand the importance of ongoing learning for an APC in rheumatology


Webinar 3: NP/PA Evaluation and Feedback

  • Define and contrast feedback and evaluation in the setting of clinical practice with a NP and PA
  • Discuss the types of feedback appropriate to rheumatology NPs and PAs at different stages of their onboarding and clinical practice career
  • Discuss the evaluation process for rheumatology NPs and PAs: initial, periodic, annual
